America's Mental Health Crisis: Shocking Numbers You Can't Ignore
How bad is the mental health of the America population? The numbers paint a grim picture of the current situation: in 2021, 57.8 million adults were experiencing some form of mental disorder, i.e. 22.8% of all US adults, out of which only 26.5 million received mental health treatment. Furthermore, 14.1 million adults (5.5% of all US adults) were diagnosed with serious mental illness, i.e. they are substantially impaired and unable to live a normal life without medication.
“From year 2005-2050, the total number of US adults with depressive disorder will increase from 33.9 million to 45.8 million, a 35% increase”
Last year (in 2022), more than 49,000 Americans killed themselves, marking the highest number in history. Since 2000, the suicide rates in the country have gone up by more than 36%.
